Description

"What if, just as David and Rosso become super duper best friends, a kid enters the picture? Rosso always wanted to have kids (which is where this idea came from), but this means David would have to interact with them on a daily basis, maybe even be asked to babysit, and definitely be mistaken for his buddy's boyfriend or even husband.... CUE DOMESTIC!AU OF MY OWN FREAKIN' SUVARRA UNIVERSE full of babies and fluff and my most BA character having to man up and play daddy to kids that aren't his (Rosso is scheduled to eventually adopt his sister's child some time soon after Jeremy.) and reluctantly accept being paired with his best friend by people who assume things about relationships."(Yes. T_T I daydream fanfiction for my own story I haven't written yet. Goshdarnit...)

Premise

The above is a panel taken from an unfinished comic that takes place in the AU I just described. David and Ross head to a Target-parody called Bullseye to do some shopping for the kid. David isn't adjusting well to sharing his best buddy with things as horribly domestic as children. By the end of the trip, people's assumptions about his relationship with Ross and his baby get to him and finally he snaps. Ross thinks it's funny, but eventually comes around to talk to him and learns that David doesn't want to be a father, or anything like one, especially not his own - among other issues. However, ultimately David can't let go of his sense of responsibility towards Ross's newfound family. While a best friend's place isn't taking up an authority position in a friend's household, Ross literally has no one but himself to take care of not one, but two young children, and David eventually resigns to this weird space between friendship, parenthood, and asexual romance.

David's Issue
David's reasons for feeling angry, selfish, disturbed, and responsible lie in his past. His relationship with his father was rocky at best, and due to a torturous event in his life soon after leaving home, he has a handful of phobias and insecurities he has a hard time overcoming, the effects of which don't let him get close to people. Ross is his closest friend, and David displays some unhealthy symptoms of codependency towards him, something David is aware of and tries to fight. However, he can't help but accept a good friendship and love, and trying to figure out what emotions and responses are healthy in an actual good relationship and what's a relapse into codependency/behavior-made-normal-in-a-previous-relationship with someone can be difficult. The comic would depict this struggle with both humor and thoughtful reflection.

Part of David's story in general, in any universe I chuck him into, is a character progression from "closed-off-cold-shoulder-jerk" to "somewhat-codependent-on-best-friend" to "able-to-form-healthy-relationships-and-stuff." Heck, even just to sleep at night. And he goes through this cycle several times until the wounds on his heart have healed. The middle part of that progression takes the longest, and in this Bullseye AU he's right in the middle of it, still not over his PTSD (among other problems) and heavily reliant on Ross to help him move passed his fears. So the little comic would cover a mini-version of this transition as he accepts the kids into his life and shakily, to Rosso's surprise, decides to stand by his best friend's side when he needs him most in a place completely outside David's comfort zone.
